Anak anak melayu sekarang

As a lecturer of a malaysian University, I am ashamed and feel partly responsible for the breakdown of iman and akhlak of University students. The glaring social and sexual activities on and off campus is a reflection of the students' iman which we have not help to nurture. As a lecturer, I feel that my responsinbility is not only to impart knowledge but to help guide the students to have and build better iman. This is especially true if the students are muslims. Yes, I must admit that I have failed. Seldom have I asked my students "How is the conditions of your iman?" I have not fulfilled my responsibilities as a guardian to the studenst.

I believe that religious responsibilities do not lie with the ustaz/ustazah alone. We must help the students to help build their iman and yakin. Without iman, the students will drift. It seems that on campus, most of their non-academic actvities are entertainment based. Why not help the students to build a grass-root program of cultivating an environment of deen and dakwah? Insya Allah, if we help the students, they can reach out to other students. There will be an environment of " amal makruf and nahi mungkar".

Some students have already expressed their concerns on the worsening situation at the malaysian University. They have pledge to give as much of their free time to do these "amal makruf and nahi mungkar". Frankly, I am inexperienced in any of these matters. However, I have a deep concern. As much as we worry about the students academic achievements, we must also worry about their iman. We must all work on out iman. Iman needs effort and sacrifices.

So far, I have been able to talk to some students on and individual basis. I have not been of much help to a bigger group of students. Insya Allah, I will try to do more this coming semester. Let us build an environment of deen on our campus.
